On Monday, we didn't have classes because of Easter, so we took a day trip to two different villages. First, we visited Giverny, a small town about an hour northwest of Paris where Monet lived and painted. Yes, it is the place of the iconic bridge and waterlilies. His gardens were beautiful and larger than his house, but unfortunately, there were no waterlilies and nothing was in bloom because it is still too cold. Nonetheless, the grounds were still beautiful. We walked around the gardens for a bit and then walked through his home. One of the rooms was filled with some of his most famous paintings, which I really enjoyed. From there we headed to the gift shop (where I obviously had to buy a small painting, lol) and then walked around the actual village. It was very quaint (that is honestly the word to describe all villages I've seen outside of Paris) with one main road lined with small restaurants and shops and surrounded by acres of pastures. We then walked to a beautiful church and the cemetery where Monet is buried. The cemetery was atop a hill that looked over the village. Afterwards, we were so cold and hungry that we had to stop for lunch; we chose one of the few opened restaurants for some delicious French onion soup. When our visit at Giverny was over, we drove about 45 minutes to Auvers-sur-Oise, the town where Van Gogh painted for a bit and then died. The drive to the town was very nice as we passed through rolling hills and fields. There were really nothing but farms and the somewhat paved road on which we were driving. Anyway, when we got to the town we weren't quite sure what there was to do there, but we ended up having a lovely afternoon. We visited un petit château that sat on the highest point overlooking the village. By then the sun had come out and the air had warmed up, so we frolicked in the large field behind the "castle" for about an hour. After resting here for a while, we visited the Absinthe Museum. We didn't go in, though, because we didn't want to pay. We then went inside the inn where Van Gogh stayed and even stood inside the room where he died after shooting himself. From there we visited the main church of the town (one which he often painted) and then walked to the top of the hill to see his tomb. By then it was time to head back to Paris. Overall, we had a great day!
