Scotland

This weekend I traveled back to the UK, this time to Scotland. I finally arrived in Edinburgh late Friday night (technically early Saturday morning). I met up with my friends studying in Sweden for the semester (one of whom was Alisha, my good friend from home). I was exhausted by the time I got to the hostel, so I just passed out. Saturday morning, we were able to sleep in a bit and then took a 3.5 hour walking tour through the city. We saw all the major sites and learned about all the history of the city. There was even a parade honoring soldiers returning from Afghanistan (this even included men in kilts playing bagpipes). After the tour we grabbed some food at the Elephant House Cafe, where J.K. Rowling wrote the first two Harry Potter books. The walls of the bathrooms in the cafe are full of notes to the author thanking her for writing the series. After this, we went to the graveyard where she got the names McGonagall and Tom Riddle. That was actually really cool! We then went to the Edinburgh Castle and got a great view of the city. Saturday night we took another tour, except this one was a ghost tour that told about the scary mysteries of Edinburgh. A good portion of this tour was on a high point in the city where we got a beautiful view at sunset. The tour ended with a creepy story of a man who, in 2002, murdered his friend and drank his blood hoping to become a vampire...yeah, super weird. Anyway, after the tour, we grabbed a delicious dinner and then passed out at the hostel.

Sunday morning we woke up, had breakfast, and then headed out for our tour of the Lowlands and Highlands. Our Scottish tour guide, Shelby, was hilarious as she told us the historical stories of the area, played music and sang some of her own songs, and drove us through the winding roads up the mountains. Our first stop was about an hour outside of Edinburgh at Sterling Castle. The castle was great, but the surrounding landscape was even more beautiful. From here, we headed to Loch Lomond with even more beautiful mountainous landscape. We stopped for lunch in a small town and then in a village by a lake. Here, we literally scaffolded the side of a mountain to get a great view! It was an amazing trip, but we were definitely tired when we got back to Edinburgh. We had a dinner at a popular pub, The World's End, and then did a pub crawl. We were only three bars in when we decided we were too tired to keep going, so we just headed back to the hostel and fell asleep.

Monday morning we had to wake up a bit earlier so we could get in one last tourist sight before our flights back to Paris/Sweden. After breakfast, we climbed yet a second mountain (actually, it's a former volcano), Arthur's Seat. It was definitely a harder climb than I expected, but it was beautiful. The view from the highest point was well worth the sweat. To one side was the city, the other was the ocean, and then the mountains. It was also insanely windy at the top! After spending some time on Arthur's Seat, we climbed back down and did some souvenir shopping. By then it was time to head back to the airport  to catch my flight. Overall, it was a perfect weekend!!

Today was one of the most beautiful days Paris has seen this year! Because it was so nice, there was no line for the Catacombs, so that's where my friend Sydney and I headed. It was awesome...so many bones!

Connie and Lani come to Paris!

When I got back from London, I was lucky enough to have my Aunt Connie and Cousin Lani to return to!! Their visit was short, but it was wonderful!! Lani (who is single, beautiful, intelligent, and willing to do long distance, hahahaha!!) had several backup plans incase a direct flight into Paris didn't work out, but everything went according to plan! On Monday, we met after my classes at Notre Dame. The weather was warm and the sun was shining. We walked through Notre Dame and Place St. Michel and then had the most delicious lunch! We then walked through the Latin Quarter and went inside the Panthéon, then sat in the Luxembourg Gardens, which were absolutely beautiful as the trees and flowers are finally blooming. We sat for a bit and enjoyed the sunshine and were able to call Yia-Yia! Our plan for the rest of the afternoon was to go to St. Chapelle, but we were in for a bit of a surprise! Turns out, St. Chapelle  was closed for the day, but there was a concert there for Vivaldi's Four Seasons. We didn't have tickets and weren't quite sure if we were going to be able to buy them, but we passed through security and continued to follow the crowd. When we got to the door we were able to buy tickets. The concert was inside the famous room with the stained-glass windows; it was absolutely amazing!! It was a night we will never forget!! Afterwards, Aunt Connie purchased a very chic pink scarf (LOL), and we had delicious ice cream and frozen yogurt at a trendy fruit bar overlooking the Seine and Notre Dame. By then, it was late and time to end the night. Without a doubt, we had an amazing day, and I was definitely sad it had to end!!

If we thought Monday was great, Tuesday proved to be just as much fun, perhaps even more because we started the afternoon off with a shopping trip! Lani and I had a great time helping Aunt Connie pick out some very fashionable outfits!! It was a true French shopping experience, especially because the Parisians actually respond to Aunt Connie in French (unlike when they respond to me in English). Anyway, she bought some beautiful clothes, and then we enjoyed a delicious light lunch. From here, we walked to Galerie Lafayette, except we went to the wrong one at first. But at least we had a nice walk through Paris and felt less guilty eating a huge dinner later that night. Eventually we found the Galerie Lafayette we were searching for. It is definitely a site so see! It's so beautiful, and there are so many floors!! We spent most of our time on the bottom floor looking at shoes. Lani and I discovered the next best thing: scented jelly shoes! Yes, you read that correctly; they were amazing! Keep your eyes open for them! After shoe shopping,  got some amazing macaroons at Pierre Hermé and did some more exploring on the upper floors. Afterwards, we headed to Montmartre and had the MOST amazing dinner I've had in Paris. It was absolutely delicious. From the wine, to the bread, to the main dishes (including the fries), to the desserts, we had an incredible meal. We spent a few hours enjoying our meal and each others company; we were even able to call Uncle George! It was the perfect night, and I could not have asked for anything more!! I am so glad they were able to come to Paris. We had such a wonderful few days! I was so sad they had to leave.
